Craft Fairs and Events Forum / Derby Swop n Shop
« on: 12 May 2012 10:25 »
A friend of mine Alison has signed up for a stall at a Swop n Shop even in Derby (at the Silk Mill june 9th) and has asked me to help her out and make a bunch of my geeky badges to sell on her Vintage and Upcycled clothing and supplies stall. It should be good fun, I have only ever done a few stalls as I'm a huge coward when it comes to my crafts being anything more than a few dolls and badges sold in my etsy shop. Anyway if anyone feels the need to visit Derby that saturday I shall be there... possibly with the Boy in tow.

I've updated my blog... / Re: Cigar box

That's fab! I have an old leather and velvet knife box that I got from a junk shop last year and have just pulled it out the other day with the intention of doing something with it. Perhaps a sewing kit or something along the lines of that. Not sure but I have been cleaning it and removing bits of glue and the broken knife holdery bits. I'm technical me.

We saw Avengers for my birthday it was awesome. Recently been watching all the X-Men movies with the Boy... such a hardship watching men in tight costumes/shirtless fight.

If that means just doing straight lines and shoving it all through the machine yes, lol. It's done in two sections as I did the top part seperately. I haven't done loads of stitching on it, just the long lines.

I have to use her name as the chances of being able to buy things with her name are fairly remote lol... that's what we get for getting her name from a random tv show lol

It's a love quilt and a lovely name. Whedon fan?  ;)

I made this a few days ago with some suede leather I was sent in a craft swap ages ago, a vintage key and some vintage pearl buttons. The Boy modelled it for me though it was hard to keep him still. Very simple design and I'm not sure how hard wearing it will be as it's soft but it looks good and the Boy was happy to bounce around wearing it for a little while. He said it was ace. I was asked by a friend if I could make her fella a steampunk cuff which I think I should be able to with the rest of the suede.

It looks fab to me! I tried quilting once and it frazzled my brain... though I do intend to attempt to make a tshirt quilt one day as I have a ton of tees that need upcycling.

Some of the zines do really well, I suppose it all depends on cost and what work we can all put into a copy. I had an article on the drabble stories I write publised in *bespoke* and when Jess sent it to me I was really impressed with the style of it, and I must admit that I do like to curl up with a magazine/zine in my hands. There is just something about the tactile holding of it. I would think for it to sell it would have to be chock full of projects (Something I know we all can do) especially autumnal/winter projects if it is an autumn issue. would need to talk a few well know bloggers that aren't *us* to blog/review copies or to be interviewed for an article in it.

I've made pillows out of my husband's shirts and tshirts (though tshirts are a pain in the bum to sew).

Going off topic here, but have you tried a ballpoint needle for these? A walking foot might help too but I still haven't figured out how to use mine yet lol

Kerry- to be honest I haven't tried sewing any tshirt material for awhile.. but I have heaps of M's and the Boy's favourite tshirts to turn into a tshirt memory quilt.... we shall see if that happens... I've not got the mindset for quilting but with the tshirts being large pieces of fabric I think I might just be able to do that... or make scarves out of the logo pieces... I've seen a good tutorial for that somewhere. I haven't bought any fancy bits for my sewing... all the dolls, pincushions and cuffs I make are all down and dirty simple sewing. *lazy seamstress*

I've made pillows out of my husband's shirts and tshirts (though tshirts are a pain in the bum to sew). Pillows are very simple to do and one can never have too many pillows. I have a cuff off a shirt to turn into a fabric cuff when I get the chance (nothing fancy jsut adding scraps of lace to it and various buttons and beads).

I commented. I like the first Seagull design. Very simple and clean design. <3  :)

I've not sewn my own from scratch but the Boy and I have decorated ones from ikea using fabric pens and paint. I have also used fabric ink to stamp buttons on a tea towel for a swap. (the button stamp came from Vv).

The last tea towel I used a freezer paper stencil to make a Firefly/Serenity Blue Sun Towel.
*geek* ;D

Non Crafts Related / What are you reading?

I'm reading Little House in the Big Woods with the Boy. I dug the books out of the attic at my parents house and brought Little House in the Big Woods and Little House On the Prairie Home with a assortment of other books I found while we were stateside. I was obsessed with the Little House books when I was a kid and read and reread them over and over again when not watching the tv show. My other even found me some bonnets at a yardsale when I was small so I could pretend I was Laura Ingalls living in the Old West. I couldn't find my copy of Farmer Boy though which was the main book I wanted to find for the Boy to read as its about Almanzo's childhood, but he does seem to be intrested in Little House, especially as it's a TRUE story of what life was like before tv, ipods, Nintendo and everything else he has.

I'm also reading a Fairy Tale anthology and a humourous fantasy novel by A. Lee Martinez called In the Company of Ogres. I still need to read A Game of Thrones as I started it but my brain switched off and got occupied with other things.

So what is everyone else reading?

My tv viewing has mostly degenerated into watching Procedural Dramas (CSI, Criminal Minds, Unforgettable) I'm waiting for the Walking Dead season 2 to start over as we missed the beginning of it. oh and Game of Thrones too (though the first season got repeated so many times that I assume the second will get the same treatment) I've been watching Supernatural and Mad Men online as M isn't bothered about either show.

We watched a bunch of random movies (Jonah Hex, a bunch of kids movies, HellBoy, the Wizard of Oz, X-Men, X-Men 2 with the Boy,while at my parents... no satallite or cable there, only a half dozen channels or so. I also watched a few films on the plane, Sherlock Homes, Crazy Stupid Love, Drive, and some forgettable comedy flicks that I zoned out watching.

We did manage to go see John Carter (of Mars) which was fun. M is going to take me to see the Avengers when its out though.

oh and I watched half of X-Men first class with the Boy yesterday.
