Theory of good card design
« on: 12 Apr 2012 09:23 »
I'm looking for websites and books that explain what makes a good card layout and what makes a bad one. I have a tendency to want to over complicate things but I am currently loving using Promarkers so I want to maybe do a bit more papercrafty stuff.

When I limit myself a bit this is what I get.... but I want to do something a bit more advanced (and buy some white card blanks for a change)...

I have no idea either - see I like the ones you have made but i would expect others wouldnt like the negative space at the top. Personally I think things floating around dont look good - but clusters of trim, trim, text etc look nice. If I use a white card blank I tend to cover most of it as it looks to white for me.

I was told to work in odd numbers on a card as a rule of thumb. I tend to use pinterest and other peoples blogs and galleries for ideas of what works. Also you could go on pagemaps, they have loads of printable card map layouts and ideas.
Also if I have a particular stamp set I will google it and make a file with all the card images for ideas

I don't think there are any rules as such. For me it's trial and error, sometimes it works...other times it doesn't!  :-\ In the past it has been nice to make up the main image/embellishment then just play around with combinations of design.....variety is the spice of life they say.

Saying that, I wish I was more adventurous in my designs and style...if I actually have "a style" that is.

Dingle - you def. have a style  :-* I love your cards.

Kerry - lots of card blogs do card plans, to inspire the layout. They help as you can do YOUR thing, but you know it will be cohesive.
