Pricing?!
« on: 8 Sep 2011 10:58 »
I normally price my cards between £1-3 each, depending on size mostly. A friend has asked me to make about 10 cards for her engagement party and next year, wants me to do her wedding invitations too. I have no idea how much to charge for bulk commissions like this! My sister made my wedding invitations and they were my wedding gift.

Any ideas?

I have attached the images that are going to be on the engagement invitations - she's going to buy engagement party stickers herself.

I personally wouldn't count 10 as "bulk" (hopefully not coming across mean here) so I wouldn't give any discount on your current pricing TBH.

I didn't mean necessarily for this one occasion - but for the wedding invitations there will be more than 10 - possibly 50+!

So £10-15 is reasonable for 10 handmade invitations then?

I'd definitely say so. Only discount what you can afford for the approx 50 or so though, you don't want to be losing money after taking into consideration the time it will take you to do and the bits and bobs you will need to buy! Might be worth working out how long each card with take you to make and your supplies cost for one so you can work out what your absolute minimum is first.

I'm not planning to buy anythinjg new for them - I said I'll only do it if I have the right supplies - I've got about 2-3k's worth of stuff (Yes, really!) so I should be ok for not buying anything else. I pretty much refuse to buy anything else unless I know I'll definitely use it!

It's worth checking out how much a commercial printer would charge. For example, these were ours:
http://dev.medievalscribe.com/product_info.php/products_id/60?osCsid=18328cceafba97f92e41ed8ef36913c1

which was A5 size. They're now £3.70 a pop! I'm sure they weren't quite that much eight years ago  :o but still - you're doing handmade, bespoke work there, not a single printed design. Don't underprice yourself because it's a friend.

You should work out the time it takes for each card and consider whether to charge for that as well as materials, like plumbers do!
