Need advice Please.........
« on: 6 Aug 2010 15:19 »
Hi! its me again. Looking around the net I believe it is possible to use a ceramics kiln for glass fusing and vise versa. Has anyone tried this.??
Because I flit from craft to craft. I would like as much versatility as possible.
And as I cannot afford 2 kilns any advise you can give would be most welcome.
Thank you in anticipation.
Opal, aka June.x
I have posted in the ceramics forum as well.I hope this is OK

Hi- yes you can use the same kiln for both....however....if you get a glass kiln you'll be limited to smaller ceramic pieces because of the dimensions of glass kilns. If you get a pottery kiln it's going to be so inefficient for glass that in terms of cost it might be as well getting both.

To be honest i'd go with a glass kiln- small ones are fairly cheap by comparison to ceramic ones and don't need either the space or the research to make sure you get the right one. You can always resell it if you want to scale up or migrate to a ceramic one.

Thank you. I have been looking around. I have decided to go into glass.
We ordered a new building for the garden yesterday.
And a glass kiln will be more useful if I want to do metalic clay crafts. And the offcuts of my glass I can turn into stained glass panels. ;)
Sounds like a plan.

It does indeed. I saw some very nice panels at the weekend in a local crafts shop which were a combination of both fused glass and stained glass. It was very effective!
