First time embossing
« on: 16 Sep 2008 16:12 »
I went out and bought a few items for powder embossing. I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing.

So I've figured so far - I stamp an image onto the card - does it matter what colour ink to use?
Then I sprinkle the powder over the stamp - I guess it sticks to the ink right?
Then I just heat it up with the heat gun and voila! Right?

help me out here!!

Embossing is so addictive...

I don't tend to use many different powders when embossing.  For most applications I stamped in whatever colour ink I want to use, and then apply clear detail embossing powder.  The other powders I use are the metallics.

You want to use an ink that doesn't dry too quickly.  I tend to use Versamark when I emboss.

When I'm using metallic powders rather than the clear powder I tend to stamp with a clear tinted embossing ink.

You can also get embossing ink pens, which you can use to go over something and then sprinkle the powder on top.

I also use an anti-static bag to wipe over the surface of the card before I stamp and emboss, so the powder doesn't stick to fingerprints etc.  You don't have to do this, and if you're using a clear powder it isn't such a big deal.

Found a quick tutorial here.

That's brilliant, thankyou! I just thought it couldn't be as simple as it looked! I will be sure to let you know how it goes :)

Yep - pretty simple!  You can get some great results too.  I emboss most of the stamped text on my cards, I just think it gives that little something extra.

I've recently been playing with Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel, which is really fun.  You can use it in much the same way to get a glassy effect to cover images, or you can use it with a melting pot to dip items into.  Again, really addictive...
