Vegetarian Christmas Main Courses
« on: 21 Dec 2009 16:05 »
I'm a lone veggie in a family of meat eaters and normally make a vegetable & nut roast for me (and my sister who used to be veggie). We're having Christmas Dinner in our own home so a veggie roast would be just too big for just me and I quite fancy something different this year, so does anyone have any recipes for a good veggie main course that would go with the normal roast dinner accompiaments. I'm a fairly good cook, and getting my shopping in tonight, so give us your best shot!

What about a meat sub instead? I know I tried something from Asda that was like sausage meat, though it was veggie stuff. I am still struggling with my DD as she has been veggie since last march and is very fussy!

If I'm remembering correctly, it's the texture that Eileen doesn't like - it's not (just) that she's a rampant animal welfare type, I think she dislikes the feeling and taste of meat so meat subs aren't really an option. I THINK!

(I know this is true for one of my veggie friends and I'm almost sure it's Eileen, but could be wrong)

did you know I used to hate meat? then a couple of years ago I tried the quorn stuff and some soya fake meat then gradually started eating meats again.  Worst vegetarian ever.

Maybe make a little veggie pie for christmas dindins? or stuff some butternut squash (bit fancier than peppers and sounds more christmassy!).

I don't mind Quorn or meat substitutions but its true that I dislike meat mainly because of the texture and feel of it. But I think i'm going to go with the red onion tart, should be quite simple methinks.

I'd give up meat in a heartbeat because I don't particularly like the taste of it that much either. The only thing is meat sub like quorn give me really bad stomach aches. Anyone else had this...or is it just me?..probably just me  :-[

I'm not a veggie, but i'm not a big meat eater either so I manage to sneak in at least 1 veggie meal a week for the family, aside from the usual rice/pasta/stir fry options i've made a chunky ratatoille (think i've spelt tht wrong) with not much liquid and made a lush pie with it, also roasted a load of veg, laid them on a sheet of puff pastry, brushed with egg, its lush and easy and looks quite nice too!

I have been a vegetarian for 24 years so have had many a meat free meal.

I do love vegetables and roast potatoes and so long as I get them then I am happy.

But we go round my in laws for Christmas and I think usually have a vegetable tart. And I had my Christmas work meal and the main course was stilton and pear tart which was lovely.

Ooh thanks for the ideas - I've been veggie for about 20 years now. I'm usually quite happy with veggies and tattie myself, but for Christmas I like to have something a bit fancy ;)
I really like the sound of the pear and stilton tart...

I wanted to have a go at making a nice veggie tart or roast this christmas but I think Ryan's already went out and bought a quorn roast.  I much prefer vegetables, nuts and pulses to meat/faux meat.

I've made these for the vegetarians in my family (myself included). The recipe makes four-six parcels. :)
