Wood Turning
« on: 23 Oct 2008 18:07 »
As promised a few pictures of lathe in action!!!

First Picture -This shows and long piece of wood (Walnut) and wood when it is sawn to length- smaller pieces  (Spalted Beech)- and the components that go to make up the pen.
You can see one piece has been drilled through the centre to put the brass barrels in.

Second picture - This shows the edges have been taken off and the wood is now round, you can speed the machine up a bit now.

Third picture -This shows the lathe turning and the chisel taking off the excess wood to the correct thickness required.

Fourth Picture -This is the end result - a lovely pen

Very nice - and interesting pics, too!

But I hope you have a dust-mask? That pretty spalting is actually caused by a fungus, and breathing the spores can harm your lungs - they're a lovely warm moist place for it to grow, y'know! Horrible thought, I know, but better safe than sorry in this case...

Dont worry, my husband has an air filter mask as he does a lot of turning and I have a mask too.  Some of the foreign exotic woods you have to be very careful with. We turned some acrylic, and the smell, even with the masks on, was awful, you could taste it if you know what I mean and the workshop stank for days, so Bob went and turned some Camphor to get rid of the smell!! We wont be turning any more acrylic. We will stick to wood.

Oh, I'm glad to hear that! Lots of people don't realise it can be dangerous...

We went to a wood turning/woodworking show about a month ago, and I only saw 1 person wearing a mask, he was turning acrylic. We couldn't believe that none of them wore masks, Ok they were probably turning green wood and not exotics but the dust coming off the lathes would still get up your nose and down the chest. They went all out to make sure that  the lathes had sheet plastic in front, so us on lookers wouldn't get shavings all over us but we were surprised at the lack of masks.
